During a recent trip to San Francisco, we booked a cheap coach trip to Muir Woods to see the Californian Redwood trees, and what a spectacular morning it turned out to be.

We started off by driving across the Golden Gate bridge, whilst our tour guide offered us a wealth of information about Alcatraz and San Francisco. Within just 30 minutes of Fishermans Wharf, we were at Muir Woods and among some of the most beautiful trees you can imagine.

The main path through the woods has a boarded walkway for easy access, and the visitor leaflet contains details of which routes to take (including how far it is to walk and how long it should take you). We opted for the 1 mile walk as we only had an hour in the woods before having to be back at our coach, although I wish we could have spent longer there.

It was such a peaceful walk through the woods, and it reminded me just how much I love walking through forests and being out in the countryside. Where’s your favourite place to wander?

This was my first opportunity to see Redwood trees, and I wasn’t disappointed. Although I am reliably informed that these Redwoods are not as large as those found elsewhere in the USA, I thought they were incredible.

I will let you in on a secret when I was photographing the trees – I used my panoramic feature to scale upwards to see the full height of the trees; and I got some pretty cool effects! Who says panoramas should only be used horizontally?!

There are a few companies offering tours to Muir Woods from San Francisco. We booked ours with Grayline Tours and I would certainly recommend them. Our tour guide was friendly, humorous and full of knowledge. He could even tell us lots about the Eucalyptus trees we were passing on the way to Muir Woods, which smelled divine by the way.

This particular tour ended with a trip to Sausalito for a quick bite to eat and some ice cream from Lapperts Ice Cream. We were told this was the best ice cream in California, and I’m pretty sure it lived up to its accolade. It was so delicious, that I thought it deserved its very own blog post!

Do you find a walk through the woods just as peaceful as I do? Have you seen the Redwoods yourself? Let me know in the comments…
