The day of love, Valentine’s Day, has arrived for another year. And for most loved-up travellers out there, dreams of picture-perfect sunsets, cosy picnics and romantic walks often spring to mind.

In this blog, we’ve asked a bunch of other travel bloggers to join us in showcasing the most romantic sunsets from around the world and just what has made them so special for each of us.

Plus, you’ll find a few destination tips along the way too and a whole bunch of sunset Instagram captions at the end to use for your very own photos of romantic sunsets.

Are you ready to go all gooey-eyed over delicious reds, oranges, pinks and golds? Here we go…

Most Romantic Sunsets in Africa

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

The most romantic sunset I have ever seen would have to be in Tanzania.

In the largest national park, Ruaha National Park, one can watch the sun go down over Africa amongst the lions and baobabs.

Almost all of East Africa pulls off amazing sunsets, but we found this one incredibly special as Ruaha isn’t as popular as the Serengeti or the Masai Mara. Meaning fewer people, less noise, and just you and nature!

Most visitors to Ruaha National Park will be on safari. However, it’s good to know that you can also do a walking safari and night game drive in Ruaha as well!

For optimal wildlife viewing, I would recommend visiting Tanzania in the dry season (June to October).

Lamu Island, Kenya

Kenya romantic sunset

The most romantic sunset I’ve ever seen was on Lamu Island, Kenya.

I stayed at Kizingo Lodge, which is located very remotely on the southern tip of the island. Therefore, you won’t find any other tourists and you’ll have the beautiful beach to yourself.

You can also climb up the sand dunes for a beautiful panorama of the island. No matter if you’re there with your partner or by yourself, the sunset will be truly magical and a wonderful moment.

If you’re on Lamu Island, make sure to also visit Lamu Town – one of the oldest towns in the world – for a journey into the past!

Chobe National Park, Botswana

For our 10th Anniversary, my husband and I travelled to Africa for the first time.

Our stay included numerous stops across the continent, but the most stunning sunsets were enjoyed during our safari in Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Watching the sunset in silence while surrounded by herds of game is a surreal experience. Most safari lodges, ours included, plan out ideal locations for enjoying the sunset and serve sundowners (drinks and snacks) to enjoy while the sun sets.

Watching the sun set over the Chobe River with Namibia in the background was my favourite part of the entire safari experience, and if you look very closely, you can see the fisherman canoeing down the river for his evening catch.

Knowing that the waters are teeming with crocodiles is further proof of how surreal the experience is and also a great example of how generations of man and wildlife have learned to peacefully coexist.

Most Romantic Sunsets in Asia

Lotus Temple, Delhi, India

Lotus Temple, Delhi offers magnificent views of sunsets in the country for people living in the capital.

It is one of the best places to witness the beautiful sunset enclosing the temple without bothering about going to distant places to watch the view.

The Lotus Temple is a romantic and meditative destination which has a peace hall and fountains and lighting outside.

Couples from the city gather near the temple to watch the beautiful and perfect sunset view from the stead.

The view is enchanting and mesmerising due to the location of the temple and the topography surrounding the area.

West Lake, Hangzhou, China

There are many romantic legends that are associated with the mystery and allure of the West Lake found in Hangzhou, China.

With this in mind, it is hardly surprising that this location makes for such a good romantic sunset.

One of these legends involves a man being imprisoned by an evil monk. To cut a long story short, a beautiful snake spirit man fell in love with the man, rescued him and lived happily ever after.

I may be missing out a few details… but Chinese people think it is a very romantic tale and the lake has become very popular for young couples to go for a date.

But dating is not the only thing you can do at this UNESCO World Heritage Site!

The whole lake is open to tourists and you can visit all of the ten scenic spots that have been revered by Chinese people for over a thousand years.

Resort Bayview Hotel, Palawan, Philippines

The most romantic sunset we’ve ever seen is in Palawan in the Philippines.

Palawan is one of the Philippines’ top tourist draws, surrounded by some of the most beautiful untouched beaches and islands.

We stayed for a few nights at the Resort Bayview Hotel, located just outside of El Nido near Las Cabanas beach.

It’s a very romantic setting, but best of all were the stunning sunsets that happened every evening. Just incredible and extremely magical!

Seminyak Beach, Bali, Indonesia

Of all the sunsets I’ve seen in my life, I truly think Balinese sunsets are the best in the game.

The sky turns a rich amber to a stunning magenta during sunset and it just feels so special and memorable.

This particular picture was taken at Seminyak beach, which is home to the famous Potato Head Beach club. Ku De Ta and Motel Mexicola are great places to party as well.

Imagine sipping on your favourite cocktails by the pool overlooking the sea and enjoying this view!

Seminyak beach is home to a lot of cool cafes, custom motorcycle shops, handicrafts and beach clubs.

Plus the sunsets on nearby Gili Meno are also pretty incredible!

Sunset at Gili Meno

Mekong River, Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang, Laos is not only a charming town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site but offers great opportunities to view a beautiful sunset.

One of the best spots to view a romantic sunset is along the Mekong River, which borders the town while dining at one of the riverside cafes or restaurants or taking a stroll on the street bordering the river.

But the best way to view the sunset is to hire your own local boat for an hour ride on the Mekong River.

Whether visiting Buddhist temples, watching the alms ceremony, or shopping at the morning and night market, there are many things to do and see in Luang Prabang.

But my top recommendation is to visit and take a dip in turquoise pools that are part of the beautiful Kuang Si Falls just outside of town.

Sairee Beach, Koh Tao, Thailand

To me, island life is the best life and therefore you can often find me in Thailand.

Koh Tao is one of my favourite islands and watching the sunset is one of the best things to do in Koh Tao.

On Sairee Beach, which is perfectly facing west, you can find lots of lounge bars with bean bags and lounge music to end your day with a cocktail in your hand watching the sun go down over the ocean.

Apart from watching the sunset, Koh Tao is also a popular place for diving, snorkelling and hiking to viewpoints.

From several viewpoint bars you can also experience the sunset, but keep in mind that after the sunset you still have to hike down.

Maldives, Indian Ocean

We are total sunset lovers and are known to pick destinations with epic sunsets.

We spent five weeks island hopping in the Maldives and every night you would find us out on our balcony watching the sunset.

During the day the Maldives light up with a thousand shades of turquoise waters but at night the sky lights up with a fiery sunset.

There is no better ending to a day in paradise than an epic sunset with your loved one.

If you’re looking for a tropical getaway with crazy sunsets, head to the Maldives – you won’t be disappointed.

Most Romantic Sunsets in Europe

Gaitis Museum, Ios Island, Greece

For our fifth wedding anniversary, we visited Greece and for the day of the anniversary, we were on Ios Island, one of the Cyclades.

And what are the Cyclades famous for? The white-washed houses, blue rooftops, and amazing sunsets.

There are quite a lot of places on the island where you can see a lovely sunset. We loved best the view from the Gaitis museum.

It’s quite a trek up but doable for any fitness level. The reward is magnificent. Don’t forget to set up your camera for a time lapse.

Ios is known as a party island but there are a lot of other things to do than party.

You can take a historical tour, hike between beaches, enjoy the beautiful beaches, practice watersports, and of course, discover the Greek cuisine.

Gellért Hill, Budapest, Hungary

I remember the first time I took my boyfriend to my home country Hungary. I was really happy that I could show him our capital Budapest.

We both really enjoy hiking, great views and nature. So having a hill with a great view in the city centre was very compelling. He loved Gellért Hill.

We could see the Castle District, the Danube and the Parliament. We decided to make our way to the castle. As we arrived, we witnessed the most romantic sunset.

It was the perfect way to end our sightseeing day.

Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen, Denmark

One of the most romantic sunsets we have ever witnessed together was on top of the tower at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.

From this vantage point, you can see out over the city with the towers of the Tivoli park casting shadows in the setting sun.

While you’re in the city, be sure to visit this park with its antique rides, or rent a bike to discover the city like a local.

Don’t forget to stop at the famous Nyhavn harbour with the colorful houses.

Our tip: Copenhagen has some great food markets, so be sure to pay Westmarket and Torvehallerne a visit.

Oroklini Lake, Cyprus

Some of the most romantic sunsets happen when you least expect them. Planning a sunset is a hard task in general but there is something you can do to give chance a hand.

If in Cyprus in winter, plan a visit to Oroklini Lake for the end of the day.

From November to March, thousands of flamingos call it home and their dark silhouettes make for a dramatic backdrop for your photos.

There is a roadside observation deck on the bank of the lake from where you and your loved one can enjoy the stunning view of the sun disk dipping below the horizon – with its reflections glittering in the water.

Loch Earn, Scottish Highlands, Scotland

Loch Earn is a freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands surrounded by heather clad mountains.

At sunset when the winding country roads have freed from cars heading up north, the water is still, silence envelopes the banks of the loch so the only sound is the chit chatter of the family of ducks heading to bed.

As the sun goes down behind the hills, the rainbow of purples and oranges transform the sky. The forestry around you rustles and the dominating peaks turn to black shadows, contrasting beautifully with the ever changing light in the sky.

You can see those majestic mountains up close in the daylight by climbing Ben Vorlich and get panoramic views over the area.

And if you fancy some fun on the loch itself, the watersports centre offers canoeing, windsurfing and sailing.

Neva River, St Petersburg, Russia

One of the most romantic places for me to watch a sunset is St Petersburg, particularly in summer time (June – July) during White Nights season.

This time of the year the sun almost never goes down, the nights are very short and the period between sunset and sunrise is between 2 and 3 hours.

The best place to watch the sunset in St Petersburg in summer is Neva river embankment. The most spectacular one is the Palace Bridge.

Every night the bridges across the river get opened for ferries and ships to go through the city, this accompanied by music with the beautiful Peter and Paul’s Fortress in the background.

It happens late at night but the sun is not completely down yet. An amazing combination of night and day when it’s difficult to understand what time it is – whether it’s already too late or still too early to go to bed.

Temple of Apollo, Naxos, Greece

The island of Naxos, Greece might not be a party spot or have the cliff side views of Santorini, but it’s got a virtually endless supply of romantic sunsets.

The best place to watch the sunset on Naxos Island is definitely the Temple of Apollo ruins located at the top of a small hill overlooking the ocean.

As a lesser known island in Greece; on Naxos, couples can enjoy the Greek island life without the crowds.

Besides watching beautiful sunsets and eating incredible local food, I would highly recommend going sailing for the day where you’ll get to swim in a cave and enjoy snorkelling on a tiny local island.

Horseback riding on the beach is also a must do experience on Naxos.

Piazzale Michelangelo, Florence, Italy

The most romantic sunset that I have experienced so far is definitely the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence.

The views of Florence’s skyline from this elevated square are simply amazing and there is also a nice restaurant. You can get there either on foot or by taking bus number 12 or 13 from the centre of Florence.

There is not a better way of understanding a city than seeing it from above. This is especially true in Florence with its characteristic red rooftops and beautiful monuments.

There are many places in Florence offering amazing views. My favourites are the top of the Duomo’s Cupola, the Giotto’s bell tower and the Uffizi Museum.

It’s best to purchase OPA tickets beforehand that allow you to access these monuments, or get the Firenze card that offers you free access and priority entrance to the museums without a reservation.

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Sunset in Puerto Escondido Oaxaca Mexico Credit A Taste for Travel

When it comes to romantic sunsets you’ll never be disappointed with the Pacific Coast sunsets in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.

The days are reliably sunny, hot and clear which means when it’s time for the sun to drop below the horizon. All you need to do is find a Happy Hour bar on the beach or a rooftop patio and get set to watch the spectacular display of nature at its finest.

Top romantic spots include Fresh restaurant on Zicatela beach, or Espadin restaurant on the Rinconada.

But given the entire sky lights up in brilliant orange and neon pink, you can catch an incredible show just walking hand in hand down the street.

The only thing rivalling the romance of a sunset in Puerto Escondido is a sunrise in Puerto Escondido.

Laguna Beach, California, USA

Laguna Beach, California is a myriad of local art, interesting culture, and culinary delights. It’s quiet and intimate during the colder seasons and much more active in the summer.

Make full use of the free trolley during the busy months and be sure to check out the “Pageant of the Masters” and “Sawdust Festival” July through August.

When it’s cold, sip cocktails at The Montage resort’s “Lobby Lounge” or the “Rooftop Lounge” at the La Casa Del Camino hotel.

No matter what time of year, Laguna Beach is amazing for couples to enjoy Pacific waters and painted skies.

Bay of Cienfuegos, Cienfuegos, Cuba

The city of Cienfuegos – the name means one hundred fires – in central Cuba is a step back in history.

The city was founded by French settlers from Louisiana and Bordeaux in the early 1800s. They brought with them a style which still defines the city today; elegant, refined, sedate.

The central plaza, named after the greatest Cuban patriot, Jose Marti, is considered the most beautiful in Cuba. It is surrounded by an explosion of fanciful architecture in many styles.

In fact the city looks more like a small town in southern France than one of the most important cities of Cuba.

Grayland, Washington Coast, USA

Grayland Washington Sunset

There is something enchanting about summer sunsets on the Washington coast.

Perhaps, it is because most of the year our sunsets are just a slow transition from grey to darker grey to black?

In the summer when the sun leisurely descends from its perch high in the blue sky and is swallowed by the sea; and the clouds are distinct formations instead of a seemingly endless blanket – peacefulness envelops you.

It is often possible to find a stretch of beach in Grayland, WA. where you can experience the sunset in solitude (or with the company of your choosing) making the experience even more exceptional.

Summer sunsets on the Washington coast are also amazing because they happen so late in the evening that you have lots of time to explore the area.

A short drive from Grayland is the small harbor town of Westport, home to the largest marina on the outer coast of the US Pacific.

Here you can enjoy fresh seafood purchased directly from the docks, be entertained by seals and sea lions, or pick up a kite to fly while watching the sunset.

There are also several places you can rent horses for a romantic ride along the beach.

If you want to extend your sunset viewing into a stargazing experience you can even camp at several state parks nearby.

Nassau, Bahamas

FLORIDA-HAL cruise-sunset 1-c2017 Carole Terwilliger Meyers-watermark

What could be more romantic than watching the sun set over the Caribbean ocean from the veranda of your cruise ship stateroom?

We enjoyed this gorgeous sight as we dressed for dinner aboard the Holland America Line Nieuw Amsterdam.

By the time we got to the Pinnacle Grill dining room to feast on lobster bisque and filet mignon, the sun had set and we were on to further delights.

The next day was spent exploring Nassau, a highlight of which was seeing the zoo’s marching flamingos.

Palm Beach, Aruba

One of the most romantic locations I’ve visited was Aruba, and more specifically Palm Beach!

Even during March, the weather was perfect almost everyday, which warranted time lounging on the beach.

Imagine yourself sipping on a delicious Pink Iguana drink (cranberry and lime juice with coconut rum) during Happy Hour with some tasty half price appetisers!

We waited until about half past 5 to witness the beginning of a beautiful sunset.

Previous visitors had the romantic idea already as you can see a heart shape in the sand overlooking the last moments of the romantic sunset to end the day.

Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA

Mauna Kea Sunset

Picture this.

You’re above the clouds on top of Mauna Kea – a 13,000 foot mountain in the centre of The Big Island. And you’re waiting for the sunset.

It appears in front of you framed by several observatories and you can’t help but catch your breath.

Once the sun disappears below the clouds, you make your way back down the mountain in order to spend some time stargazing at one of the most incredible night sky locations in the whole world.

Where not only millions of stars glitter and shine but the Milky Way is also on display… and you don’t even need a telescope!

Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles, USA

Los Angeles Sunset

Our trip to Los Angeles in 2016 was our first time in California together. Although we only had a short 2 day layover before heading to Hawaii and San Francisco, we wanted to make the most of it.

Our first full day was spent exploring the main sights including Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and the Walk of Fame stars to name just a few.

This was all super exciting to see, but it was on our second day that made us realise just how beautiful California can be.

We decided to spend some time lazing on the beach (in between eating our weight in Mexican food!)

And as the sunset arrived, the surrounding palm trees just seemed to frame it so perfectly!

What could be more romantic than this view?

Most Romantic Sunsets in Oceania

Byron Bay, Australia

Out of all the places I’ve visited across the globe, Byron Bay in Australia has had some of the most memorable sunsets.

With the surf rolling in and the iconic “Wreck” jutting out of the water as it turns golden in the fading light, backed by the beautiful sounds of the nightly drum circle – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine by the ocean and finish off the day.

This is a hotspot for travellers – with the stunning walk along the coast to the lighthouse (the most Easterly point of Oz and ideal for whale watching) to dolphin kayaking and of course surfing.

The hippy vibes, barefoot living and gorgeous beaches make it one of my favourite places on the planet.
